Venture Capital & the Growth of the Silicon Valley
Article Abstract:
Three events have brought the United States to a position of superior technology: namely, refugees from Europe who were scientists during the 1930s, investment in research and development during the Second World War, and the GI Bill. Several reasons explain why California became the focus of the microelectronics revolution. California has the record for raising capital. The semiconductor industry allows reduced cost and increased performance continually. High returns in venture capital are due to growth in revenues and earnings. The speculative market is the leading risk to the flow of venture capital. The forecast for venture capital in the 1980s reveals that venture capital money will be available. Outstanding opportunities exist for semiconductor manufacturers.

A Comparison of Modeling Practices in Domestic and Foreign Firms
Article Abstract:
This study examines the impact of the software revolution on the adoption of computer-based planning systems by foreign firms. New computer languages called planning and modeling languages have been developed that enable managers to build planning models instead of data processing personnel exclusively. Domestic and foreign firms are surveyed to determine similarities and differences concerning the utilization of computer-based planning systems. Tables reveal barriers to the adoption of computer-based planning systems and factors in the adoption of modeling languages. Foreign firms are more likely to build computer-based planning models; however, the reasons for selecting modeling languages are similar to those in the U.S.
