Wang Labs wins suit for chip patent, banning NEC, Toshiba from U.S. sales
Article Abstract:
Wang Laboratories Inc wins its patent suit against Toshiba Corp and NEC Corp, thereby banning the two Japanese chip makers from the US manufacture or sales of single in-line memory modules or SIMM. SIMM is a package of nine memory chips increasingly being used by manufacturers of IBM-PC compatibles as add-on memory cards. Wang's patent victory allows it to collect royalties from licensing agreements. Company officials say they expect NEC and Toshiba to seek a license right away instead of appealing the case, since an appeal would take at least nine months. Both companies are expected not to want to be out of the US SIMM market for nine months. Wang officials would not disclose the level of royalties they would ask for; any licensing agreement, however, would include a stipulation that the licensee will not appeal the ruling.

Wang Labs had a wider loss in its 1st period
Article Abstract:
Wang Laboratories Inc reports a loss of $66.6 million, or 39 cents a share, for the 1st qtr ended Sep 30, 1992. The loss includes $28 million of charges related to Wang's reorganization. In the same period of 1991, Wang lost $9.8 million, or six cents a share. Revenue is down 22 percent, to $360 million from $461.1 million. Wang had expected to lose money, but the size of the company's loss complicates its attempts to emerge from bankruptcy proceedings. The company filed for Chapter 11 protection in Aug 1992. In spite of Wang's problems, creditors will probably not seek the company's liquidation. Creditors have the best chance to get something if Wang continues in business.
