Web trap; Internet's popularity threatens to swamp the on-line services; millions of users bypass AOL and others to connect; big media pull out, too; training ground for rookies
Article Abstract:
General World Wide Web users are increasingly discovering that a majority of of their needs can be provided by independent Internet-access providers (IAP) rather than by more expensive online-service providers such as America Online (AOL). Most commercial services are presently facing significant challenges from IAPs in terms of subscriber defection, rate prices and the amount of content provided. Services such as AOL are still increasing their range of business, adding value in terms of offering Web users searching, advice and programming features. Direct Web usage often saves users from the significant fees associated with per-hour commercial service charges, even though IAPs charge slightly higher monthly rates. The Web's astounding recent growth shadows the impressive membership numbers posted by AOL and others, and increased competition promises even greater growth for the Web.

Andersen Consulting to unveil software to aid shopping on Internet for CDs
Article Abstract:
Andersen Consulting is launching an experimental software system for the Internet that will enable consumers to search through on-line music stores for the CDs of their choice. The service, named BargainFinder, uses intelligent agents on the World Wide Web to search for specified musical titles and artists. Consumers receive a report that details the results of the search and can ask to be transported to a specific site. Andersen Consulting is hoping to capitalize on the growing interest in electronic commerce. Intelligent agents could drastically improve the methods currently used in electronic shopping. Forthcoming intelligent software and services promise to empower the user and increase competition among online merchants.
