What support is needed by innovative small business?
Article Abstract:
A survey of Small Firm's Merit Award for Research and Technology awardees reveals the difficulties experienced by small firms in financing their innovation activities. Although small business' contribution to technological innovation is being increasingly recognized, support from public, financial and commercial institutions is lacking. The main challenges small businesses face include establishing technical viability and financial support, recruiting and maintaining specialists and gaining industrial partners as well as a niche in the market. The results suggest that venture capital for high risk technological innovations remains limited. Also, local practical assistance for such projects could be made available by collaboration among government, business and educational institutions. Finally, these results have important implications for science and technology policies for the imminent single European market.

Is after-hours trading informative?
Article Abstract:
The lead-lag market framework between the day-and-night markets proposes a possible networking of price-volume information, wherein surprises in one market have predictable impacts on the other. Greater study of cross-market behavior suggests that ACCESS variables are instructive in forecasting daytime volume, though not daytime prices. Greater knowledge can be gained about the operation of futures trading by taking into account day-and-night sessions together than by just concentrating on one to the rejection of the other.
