Where We Are In the Year of the Network
Article Abstract:
Networks will continue to advance technologically, with networks connected into a 'host' computer, or 'peer' office machines that can communicate with each other. Networks can be work area networks which cover a small area such as an office, long distance networks, metropolitan area networks, and local area networks. Ethernet, a Xerox created work area network, has been enhanced by the development of a microchip that can hook together personal computers. 3 Com chips tie together IBM PCs, and Ethernet 3270 allows IBM PCs to access IBM mainframes. Australian- based Time Office Computers can transmit data to as many as 255 workstations. Requirements for networks are being standardized.

Latest Network Offering
Article Abstract:
Remington Office Machines offers the NBI Office Automation System, a network of clusters of word and information systems run on an 8086 16-bit main processor. The system uses the OASys sixty-four range of hardware and is compatible with the 3000s word processor and NBI OASys Model II workstation. Users may choose from twenty to 132 megabytes of hard storage. To provide maximum networking capabilities, integrated control units (ICUs) are arranged as the centers of star configurations allowing the transmission of information between units or independent processing at work stations while the main processor is supporting primarily word processing.

Micro for Network Link
Article Abstract:
The Vector 4 is an 8-16 bit microcomputer which runs on the Z80 or 8088 microprocessor and can alternate between them. The Vector 4 has 128K of main memory expandable to 256K. A video controller and software allow high resolution graphics with several levels of gray. The keyboard has fifteen function keys. A Vector Local Interactive Network Communication (LINK) network of up to sixteen computers can be implemented with the Saber-Net controller board, modified CP-M operating system, and telephone wire.
