Women are taking over the leadership of family owned businesses more and more in the late 1990s. Women are seen exerting leadership in 3 areas in particular. First, management of the business; second, ownership of the business; and third, family philanthropy. Two case studies are business owners Karen Elm Johnson and Helen E. Dragas.

A new style of business leadership is emerging that is nonautocratic and less hierarchical. The trend in management is toward companies run by a management team rather than one individual. Effective leaders have the flexibility to cope with changes in the business environment.
