Word Processing-Where the Electronic Typewriter Fits In
Article Abstract:
Computerized word processing systems are being separated into areas for typing activity only, whereas the electronic typewriter is used by secretaries and others whose requirements are for occasional typing of short documents. Most electronic typewriters have facilities for automatic heading centering, carriage returns, and statistical column formatting, while a few have external memory or displays. Searching and replacing, phrase memory, and bold typing are features on some models. Page memory allows insertion and deletion. Some electronic typewriters can be used as printers of for TELEX output. Relatively slow processing speed and small internal storage are two of the main limitations. Four pages of comparison charts on the costs, features and capabilities are included.

Information Processing: Don't Wait for Utopia
Article Abstract:
Office automation is the utilization of technology to aid people. Technology is changing so fast; there is fear of immediate obsolescence. Jed Simms advice is to ignore obsolescence and take advantage of the benefits. Word processing is now standard office procedure, but other technology has not established such credibility and has been added without thought to compatibility. The trend will be toward integration of text, data, voice and image processing into information systems, supporting management, and administered by a central data processing department. A comparison chart of word processors from sixteen companies is presented. Over twenty-five features are compared.

Calling the Bluff of the Phony Demonstrator
Article Abstract:
When selecting a word processor, several precautions will help ensure a successful purchase. Give the vendor a sample of work and special forms ahead of time, but have a demonstration with input on the exact same equipment. If possible, take a team, including a typist, to evaluate different aspects and write observations immediatlely afterward. Note the number of sequential keystrokes or simultaneous combinations of keystrokes to perform commands, investigate the prompt system, and ask questions.
