World Book offers its encyclopedia on CD-ROM, finally
Article Abstract:
World Book's eponymous multimedia encyclopedia compares favorably to Microsoft's Encarta, although the latter offers better information on computers and related topics. The World Book comes on two CDs and holds 17,500 articles. Although Encarta has 31,000 articles, the products are almost equal in length. Encarta offers a more polished interface, but World Book's interface can be more effective. The World Book articles display clearly, and graphics appear within the text, instead of appearing next to the text, as they do in Encarta. World Book's excellent Just Looking feature allows users to browse randomly or by broad category. The World Book maps are outstanding, and electronic overlays allow users to see climatic and demographic information. The videos on the World Book CDs offer a depth of information not found on Encarta. World Book works more smoothly with the Internet than Encarta. World Book costs about $50 after a $20 rebate, and the two-disk Encarta is about $70. IBM produces and distributes World Book.

If you can name bald NBA centers, this game is for you
Article Abstract:
Berkeley Systems' $29 You Don't Know Jack is a refreshing departure from other CD-ROM-based interactive computer games. The game succeeds througha reliance on sophisticated humor, good writing and enough variety to provide hours of entertainment. The flippant, hip game is a parody of popular television trivia show Jeopardy that features heckling from a virtual host and an emphasis on pop culture that does not completely neglect more traditional realms of erudition. The game's only drawbacks are that the 800 questions do begin to repeat eventually, no electronic scoring is provided for tournament play and there is no option of defeating the jingle and the host's narration of questions, which slow the game down. A disk of supplemental questions and an updated version are scheduled for for fall 1996.
