Yeltsin unveils Chechnya peace plan

Yeltsin announced a compromise peace plan with Chechnya in a televised speech given on Mar 31, 1996. He called for an immediate cease fire, withdrawal of some Russian troops and mediation with Chechnya leader Dzhokhar M Dudayev. Dudayev said all Russian troops must be withdrawn.

Russian troops renewed their assault against Grozny on Jan 12, 1995, after a two-day cease-fire fell apart. Thousands have been killed in the fighting and an estimated 200,000 have fled the city. Rebel leader Dzhokhar M. Dudayev urged Russia to negotiate a peace settlement.

Russia, Chechnya reach truce in secession conflict

Russia and the break-away republic of Chechnya signed a peace accord on Jul 30, 1995, that calls for an end to the fighting and a withdrawal of Russia forces from the region. Chechnya leader Dzhokhar M Dudayev originally opposed the accord, but on Aug 2, 1995, approved it.
