Antibiotics account for 43 percent of Cipla's domestic sales. It produces Norflox (norfloxacin), Ciplox (ciprofloxacin) and Novomax (amoxycillin). The company plans to export the bulk drug, sildenafil citrate, to unregulated markets. It has five facilities, two in Mumbai and one each at Kurkumbh, Patalganga and Bangalore. Exports of formulations account for 15 percent of its sales. Its debt-to-equity ratio is 0.1. Its earnings per share was Rs50.8 in 1997-98. CIPLA, ORCHID CAN EXPORT VIAGRA CLONE
Article Abstract:
The Drug Controller of India (DCI) has given licence to Cipla Ltd and Orchid Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals (OPC) to export sildenafil citrate. The bulk drug is used in the anti-impotence pill, Viagra patented by Pfizer. OPC had applied to the DCI for exporting 39 tonnes of sildenafil citrate. Cipla has applied to the DCI for making the formulations which will hit the Indian market in four to six months time. Kopran and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories are also developing sildenafil. Viagra's annual sales is estimated at $5 billion to $11 billion in the past three years. Pfizer has patents for Viagra in 40 countries and sells it in 4 countries. (rk)

CIPLA SET TO HIT INDIANS WITH DESI VIAGRA

The pharmaceutical firm, Cipla has sought the approval of the Drug Controller of India for marketing its version of anti- impotency drug, Viagra in India. The drug is owned by Pfizer of the US. Cipla recently exported the bulk drug, sildenafil citrate used in the formulation of Viagra, to South America. The drug will be marketed in India within the next 6 months. Cipla's share price has increased from Rs682 on April 1, 1998 to Rs799 on May 15, 1998. The drug is priced at $10 per tablet for a 50 mg dosage in the US. Indian companies may price the pills at Rs30- Rs40 each. (rk)
