A consundrum for Austria - and for Europe
Article Abstract:
The far-right Freedom party may join the Austrian government with the People's party from the center-right. The Freedom party is headed by Jorg Haider, governor of Carinthia state, who would not actually sit in government but is expected to control the party. European leaders are concerned and may seek to boycott Austria, a tricky issue since it involves issues of sovereignty. The Freedom party is not a Nazi party, Austria's President Klestil has argued, but he ws concerned that its language is unsuitable for a party of government.

Austria's rancid choice
Article Abstract:
The far right Freedom party may join the Austrian government and the European Union is unwise to seek to exclude Austria as a result of this action. There are good reasons for criticizing Jorg Haider, leader of the party, but there have also been problems with Austria's political system, which has meant a division of patronage by the two main parties on the center left and center right. Haider does not represent a threat to the democratic system.

Haunted: Austria
Article Abstract:
Four major candidates are vying for the office of president in Austria's election, but non-candidate Jorg Haider of the Freedom Party may hold the key to victory. If no candidate wins a 50% majority, a runoff will be held between the top two vote-getters. In this race, Haider's support could be crucial.
