A deafening silence
Article Abstract:
China's crackdown to prevent strife on the June 4, 1995, anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre came amid bold new calls for openness and political reform. Six petitions bearing 200 names, many distinguished, may signal an effort by would-be supreme leaders to discredit patriarch Deng Xiaoping, or perhaps to show his designated successor Jiang Zemin that others have popular backing and could mount a credible threat. The day passed without major incident, perhaps indicating widespread contentment.
