A downright liberty
Article Abstract:
There is concern that the British home secretary, Jack Straw, aims to curtail the right to a jury trial, and this policy has previously been opposed by Straw himself. It is praisworthy that Straw wants to cut costs and reduce legal delays, but this has to be assessed in terms of costs such as loss of publci faith in the system of criminal justice and the problems faced by ethnic minorities. The system does not appear to be abused. There is concern that the ruling Labor party has little respect for individual citizens' civil rights.
