A friend indeed: under U.S. pressure, Iran woos its neighbours
Article Abstract:
Iran hopes to build a regional axis around itself, China, and India to oppose US interests and cement its own influence throughout Central Asia. President Clinton of the US has imposed a ban on trade with Iran, but his efforts to persuade other countries to join have borne little fruit. Iran's latest moves reflect a shift in strategy, in part to support Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, and it has given India its long-sought route into Central Asia. Pakistan is increasingly isolated, hurting the pro-US Prime Minister Bhutto.

All together now: diverse opposition groups combine to combat Bhutto
Article Abstract:
Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto faces the strongest political challenge yet to her control in a broad alliance of opposition parties with the sole purpose of bringing her down. Such coalitions have succeeded in the past, notably in 1977 when one preceded Bhutto's father's fall as prime minister. The grouping also promises to march on Islamabad and surround parliament, which Bhutto herself tried successfully in 1993. She is also beset by a financial crisis, bombings, a decline in the army's confidence, and more.
