A global firm for a global policy
Article Abstract:
Zelezarny a dratovny (ZDB) (Bohumin, Czech Republic), iron and wire firm, is trying to increase the productivity of labour in all its production sectors. The growth of the firm's productivity of labour is the sole way to competitiveness. ZDB's turnover should increase to nearly 12 bil Kc in 2002 compared to about 8 bil Kc in 1998. ZDB should have 5,000 employees in 2002 compared to about 6,200 in 1998. ZDB's production includes five sectors. ZDB's Dramix wire, which is used as concrete reinforcement, has top worldwide parameters. The company is one of the leading European wheel set production firms. ZDB's production of other wire kinds, heating equipment and metallurgy products is behind European competitors in the field of productivity of labour. ZDB's Dramix wire production is a joint project with Bekaert (Belgium). The investment in the first joint venture, which started Dramix production in 1998, exceeded 1 bil Kc. The second Dramix production joint venture should be commissioned in 1999. The investments in this joint venture will amount to more than 1 bil Kc. Each of the joint ventures should generate a turnover of more than 1 bil Kc per year. Each of them should have about 80 employees. ZDB's wire plant, which ensures other wire production excluding Dramix, expects a turnover of over 2.5 bil Kc with 1,700 employees in 1998. ZDB's proceeds from wheel set production should exceed 2 bil Kc in 1998. ZDB produces 120,000-130,000 wheel sets per year. The firm has more than a 20% share on the European railway wheel set production market. ZDB invested 320 mil Kc in the modernisation of its wheel set production in the middle of the 1990's.
