A healthy future
Article Abstract:
Rapid economic growth in India has come at the same time as the revamping of the country's financial system. India now has a highly developed banking system, and this is set to benefit from expansion in industry and infrastructure. Banking has now been opened up to the private sector, it has become more simple to open new branches, and the Reserve Bank of India has introduced stricter capital-adequacy standards, thus strengthening banks' balance sheets. Government regulations which impound a large portion of deposits in government securities are likely to be relaxed shortly.

China breaks the bank
Article Abstract:
China's People's Bank hopes to use a new banking law to create a national system of commercial banking, energize the state banks, unify the credit unions, and establish itself as regulator rather than bank. The country now has 510,000 outlets for banks and other financial institutions, most of them credit unions. Many of the latter, without the restrictions placed on true banks, have become very profitable on paper, but most have large bad-loan portfolios. China hopes to consolidate the credit unions to challenge banks.

On the move
Article Abstract:
Dutch bank ABN Amro aims to become one of the three leading banks in Asia, rivalling Citibank and HSBC. Its ambitious approach has allowed it to attract relatively young managers from a number of different countries. It aims to generate at least 10% of total bank revenue from Asia by 2002, around double the current ratio. It has identified five key markets in Asia, but will not reveal which these are. It has doubled the number of its employees in Asia since early 1997, and will make a further 10% increase in 1998.
