A model of sound
Article Abstract:
Microelectronics in the design of new musical instruments has made great progress. First came the invention of FM synthesis, a method of electronically simulating musical instruments, by Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (Karma). Yamaha of Japan used FM synthesis in its DX-7 line of synthesizers. A new company, Ensoniq, superseded this technology by developing wave-table synthesis, which reproduces better-quality sound by first changing it to digital form. Karma has countered by using mathematical models of how instruments function.

New building blocks
Article Abstract:
The carbon molecule buckminsterfullerene, which is composed of 60 atoms formed in the shape of a geodesic dome, was discovered in 1985 by Richard Smalley. Following this discovery was the identification of a bigger carbon molecule consisting of 70 atoms. In Japan, where research of buckminsterfullerene is most active, researchers have discovered that the molecule can be used as a superconductor. Further research reveals the existence of bucky tubes, which are a lot stronger than ceramic superconductors. Ongoing research hopes to find more usage for buckminsterfullerene.

Stepping on the gas
Article Abstract:
The abundance and efficient and clean combustion of hydrogen make it attractive as an alternative to fossil fuels. The discovery by Dutch scientists in 1969 of metal alloys called hydrides that can absorb and slowly release the gas presented a possible solution to safe storage of the highly volatile gas, a solution essential to powering vehicles over meaningful distances. The high costs of extracting hydrides presented another problem, but Japanese and American industrial researchers are already working on nickel-hydride batteries for electric vehicles.
