Article Abstract:
Book retailing in the United Kingdom has been affected by the end of the Net Book Agreement, which meant that retailers had to sell at publishers' prices. Supermarkets benefited from this change since they could discount books. Book store chains see supermarkets as presenting little threat. Internet sales could rise, though major booksellers are developing websites themselves. Specialist book clubs can compete by targeting readers. Book sales look set to increase by 17% in 2001 compared with 1997, according to Mintel, but smaller stores face intense competition.

Pile 'em high
Article Abstract:
Book stores could be seen as under threat from digital TV, the Internet, and longer working hours, yet two large book stores have been opened in London, England, by Waterstones and Borders. The end of the Net Book Agreement is one reason for the proliferation of large book stores, and many smaller independent stores have had to close. Internet retailers look set to increase their market share, and large book stores aim to compete against this threat by making it pleasurable to visit a book store.
