A new perspective
Article Abstract:
An exhibition, and accompanying book, aims to raise the issue of protecting post-war buildings. A photographic exhibition, 'A Change of Heart: English Architecture Since the War - Policy for Protection,' is being held at the Royal College of Art, London, England, organised by English Heritage. The exhibition is designed as part of efforts to establish the criteria by which post-1945 buildings can be chosen for statutory protection. It is clear that such buildings should be protected but it is difficult to identify them without a historical perspective.

A synthesis of ancient forms and modern technology
Article Abstract:
Student accomodation under construction at St.John's College, Oxford, England uses modern pre-cast and in-situ concrete elements to create a classical design. The building has been designed by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard and is remeniscant of Roman architecture which has been further influenced by the work of Sir John Soane. Pre-cast and in-situ concrete techniques have been combined to give precise columns and other structural elements while textures and surface treatments are used to give variety akin to that of natural stone.

Civic pride
Article Abstract:
By the middle of the nineteenth century, Manchester had grown into a wealthy, international cotton city, and its town hall was no longer large for Manchester's increasing needs. In 1866, a competition was launched to find an architect and a site for a new town hall that could combine urban, public and civic functions. Alfred Waterhouse's grand-modern-Gothic design won the competition and the foundation stone was laid in October 1868.
