People have welcomed the most iconic of natural materials slate used for roofing and flooring into both commercial developments and residential buildings across the UK country. People like slate, as it is a practical, natural material with durable, traditional association, not manufactured, but quarried in an extraction process that goes back centuries.

The Afro-Caribbean Millennium Centre, existing in a disadvantaged area of Birmingham, houses the Afro-Caribbean Resource Centre (ACRC) that is designed by Birmingham based D5 architects, as a symbol of modernity and regeneration. Details of the building with its special design features and use of steel for the framework are outlined.
