A sorry lot of Democrats(poor candidates from Democratic party in governorship elections in mid-west)
Article Abstract:
The Democratic party has presented a poor set of candidates for elections for governorships in the mid-Western states. These candidates include Geoffrey Fieger in Michigan, who has described Jesus Christ as a 'goofball', and Glen Poshard in Illinois who appears to be more conservative in some respects than his opponent from the Republican party. The liberal Tom Vilsac appears unlikely to win Iowa against his Republican opponent, Jim Ross Lightfoot. The Democrats have trouble in finding good quality candidates in the mid-west.

The hopefuls line up, hands held out
Article Abstract:
There are a number of hopeful candidates for the US presidency, including Al Gore, vice-president, for the Democrats, and George W Bush for the Republicans. Bob Smith and Elizabeth Dole are also possible contenders for the Republicans. TV advertising is expensive, and candidates need a long time to raise campaign funds, so electioneering starts early. Candidates who cannot attract funds are likely to be excluded from the race. Gore, Dole and Bush are all likely to be able to raise funds easily.

Out of shambles, stength?
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton is strengthened by the results of the US mid-term elections of 1998, and the Democratic and Republican parties have predominated, with little space for candidates from other parties. Democrats are likely to close ranks with Al Gore seen as heir to President Clinton. The Republicans are moving away from measures linked to the religious right, and are seeking to attract Latino voters by taking a more tolerant approach on issues such as immigration.
