Productivity growth of US workers has lagged behind growth in Europe over the last 20 years. Some economists feel that the problem is less business investments and others feel that the statistics do not measure productivity accurately. Robert Gordon proposes a combination of these and other factors.

Self-employment increased rapidly during the 1980s in OECD countries despite the usual long hours, low pay and high failure rate. Governments are promoting self-employment as an alternative to unemployment, with some good results. Statistics and analysis of trends are provided.
