ADDING COLOUR TO WHITE GOODS
Article Abstract:
The colour television sales have fallen by 25 to 30 percent and black and white televisions have shown a 5 percent negative growth since January 1999, according to a data of Consumer Electronics and Television Manufacturers' Association (Cetma). The industry is demanding some duty reliefs from the Government in the 1999 budget to sustain its performance during 1999-2000. The Finance Minister has announced a revised excise duty structure comprising three tiers - merit (8 percent), mean (15 percent) and demerit (40 percent). Mr Vijay Crishna, Managing Director of Godrej- GE Appliances, opines that if the new structure is implemented the consumer goods will come under 15 percent duty structure. This will be three percent lower compared to the current duty. This, the industry feels, will trigger demand and also increase tax revenue for the Government. (um)(psr)
