ADM sentences show hard U.S. antitrust stance

Two former Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (ADM) executives were sentenced to two-year prisons terms. Former ADM executives Michael D. Andreas and Terrance S. Wilson were also fined $350,000 (343,896 euros) in the company's price-fixing case. Both men are scheduled to begin their sentences in September 1999. They were convicted by a jury for conspiring with four Asian rivals to fix the global lysine market.

Investigations reveal that the US cow infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy may have originated from Canada, and was likely already infected. This finding however has not alleviated concerns about other sick cows in the US, and 20 trading partners worldwide show no sign of removing their bans on US beef products.

Tate & Lyle unit settles U.S. suit for $100 million
Article Abstract:
The U.S. unit of London-based food-ingredients company Tate & Lyle PLC will settle a nine-year-old lawsuit by paying $100 million. The company has face a class action suit for allegedly fixing the price of a sweetener.
