DEFUSING THE POLLUTION BOMB
Article Abstract:
One of the most serious problems that India faces is the lack of clean drinking water. Even the ground water in industrialised areas is not fit for drinking as it is contaminated with metals and bacteria. The air in the cities is polluted with carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and suspended particulate matter. The emission of contaminating gases from power plants is expected to treble in the next ten years. Thermal power plants produce about 75 million tonnes of fly ash every year and this is expected to increase to 100 million tonnes by 2000 AD. (khr)

THE HAZARDS OF ECOTRADE
Article Abstract:
Indian recyclers of non-ferrous metal waste have been deprived of raw materials like zinc and lead as the Basel Convention restricts the movement of hazardous wastes. There is a domestic shortfall of 65,000 tonnes of zinc every year due to zinc trade restrictions. The leather industry is being encouraged to use ecolabels on leather products as well as the process of manufacture. This will help the country get greater acceptance for its leather products abroad.
