The Planning Commission has submitted a proposal for the revival and restructuring of Hindustan Teleprinters Ltd and Indian Telephones Industry. The Commission has proposed capital restructuring and tie-ups with international firms for the two public sector companies. It has also recommended that all telecom services should be given infrastructure status and producers of indigenised products given deemed export status. (khr)

HUGHES ISPAT PAYS UP Rs79 CR

Hughes Ispat Ltd of Mumbai, which holds the basic telecom licence for Maharashtra and Goa, has paid Rs79 crore, which represents 20 percent of its outstanding licence fees. The company had earlier filed a petition in the Delhi High Court to prevent the government from encashing its bank guarantees. The court had given it 10 days time to pay 20 percent of its outstanding dues. (khr)
