AUSTRIA: APPROVAL FOR SEMMERING ROAD TUNNEL
Article Abstract:
Osterreichische Autobahnen- und Schnellstrasen AG (OSAG) says that it has now received all approvals that are needed for the construction of the Semmering road tunnel, after the relevant authorities in Neunkirchen granted an environmental approval. The 4-lane tunnel involves an investment of Sch 4.7bn-4.8bn, including 14 km of road. Construction has already started on the 2.5-km Spital tunnel section, while work on the actual Semmering tunnel that will be 3.5 km long is to begin by November 2000. Work on the 1.8-km Steinhaus tunnel is to start in mid-2001. The project is to be completed by autumn 2004. However, it is suggested that the change of plans concerning road tolls for trucks may jeopardise the financing of the tunnel.
