AUSTRIA: BATTLE FOR MINERAL WATER MARKET SHARES
Article Abstract:
In Austria, Voslauer is launching a new mineral water at the end of May 2000, of which it is hoping to sell 5mn bottles per year within three years. The sales target for year 2000 is 1.5mn litres. The new low-carbon-dioxide drink called Balance contains extracts of lime blossom, dandelion, marigold and balm. It comes in one-trip PET bottles of 0.5 litres (for Sch 11.90) and 1 litre (Sch 18.90), while restaurants are supplied with glass bottles. Voslauer is the market leader in the food retail trade, ahead of Romerquelle, which leads the restaurant sector. The latter is the only company in Austria offering mineral water in multi-trip PET bottles. According to figures by ACNielsen, the market share of the latter bottle type has fallen from 13.8% to 12.6% in the past year. The share of one-trip PET bottles has risen from 28.9% to just under 45%. According to Voslauer, there is no acceptance in the retail trade for new multi-trip bottle systems. Moreover, the consumers targeted with Balance want light bottles. While Voslauer, which sells about 140mn litres of mineral water per year, is betting on the wellness trend, Romerquelle sees much greater potential on the markets in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

AUSTRIA: DEPOSIT ON DRINK PACKAGING?
Article Abstract:
It is considered unlikely that the recycling rates of the packaging of mineral water and milk in Austria at the end of year 2000 will reach the prescribed levels of 96% and 80%, respectively. If these limits are not reach, the environment ministry may introduce deposits on such packaging. According to research by Nielsen, the share of plastic packaging in the packaging of drinks in Austria rose from 23% to 53.6% between the beginning of 1998 and mid-February 2000. At the same time the share of glass fell from 76.9% to 46.4%.
