AUSTRIA: BATTLE ON WESTERN NEWSPAPER MARKET
Article Abstract:
Innsbruck-based Tiroler Tageszeitung has appealed to consumers in eastern Austria in order to win them as partners in a protest against Mediaprint, the distributor of the tabloid dailies Kronen Zeitung and Kurier. In leaflets distributed to all households in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, Tiroler Tageszeitung pointed out that subscribers to Krone in Vienna pay 127% more for their paper than those in Tirol. At the beginning of August 1999 Kronen Zeitung and Kurier raised subscription prices to Sch 225, justifying the move with increased production costs. At the same time, it cut the subscription in Tirol to Sch 99. By offering the paper in self-service bags and introducing a regional edition, Kronen Zeitung has managed to almost double circulation in Tirol to about 117,000. The circulation of Tiroler Tageszeitung has remained largely unchanged at about 300,000 copies. The Innsbruck-based paper is considering to file a complaint with the antitrust authorities.
