AUSTRIA: BRAU UNION TESTING PET BOTTLES

Austria's biggest beer producer Brau Union is testing beer in single-trip PET bottles. If the test turns out to be successful, the company will launch Zipfer in brown 0.3-litre PET bottles by the end of year 2000. For this it will need a new bottling facility for 10,000-20,000 bottles per hour. Brau Union reports a 12% increase in the sales of canned beer. To meet this trend, the Gosser beer will be available in packets of six cans in future. Brau Union aims to boost the sales of weizen (wheat) beer by setting up restaurants of its own. The first Edelweiss restaurant is to be opened in Vienna by the end of year 2000. Among the specialities of the brewery is a new beer called Yeti-Gluhbier . Moreover, Brau Union is betting on sales via internet. In this sector, the company is cooperating with retail groups. In 1999 Brau Union saw an upturn in domestic sales from 5.001 hl to 5.004 hl, while turnover remained unchanged at Sch 7bn. Exports declined 1.9% in volume.

Brau Union is to concentrate its operations in Graz at the Puntigam brewery. The Brau-Union subsidiary Steirerbrau AG of Graz is to close the former Reininghaus brewery that no longer served as a production site. The 160 office, computer services and marketing staff will move to Puntigam brewery. The latter is the target of investments of Sch 43mn, including a modern distribution centre. The reorganisation is to be concluded by the end of 1999.

Brau Union is testing Gosser beer on the US market on a small scale. Gosser is the only beer of the company to be launched in the US. According to director Johann Sulzberger, the Yeti beer, which is served hot, has turned out to be successful in ski resorts. The beer is made of European hops and Asian cherry blossom.
