AUSTRIA: CERNY, NORDSEE COMBINE WHOLESALE ARMS

Austria's two biggest fish wholesalers are merging their wholesale operations with effect from 1 November 1999. Following the approval of the European Commission, Nordsee takes a 50% stake in the new company that combines the fish wholesale operations of Nordsee and the Austrian company Cerny. The retail operations of the German-based company are not affected by the merger. The retail outlets of Cerny in Baden, St. Polten and Vienna will be taken over by Nordsee. The new fish wholesaler C & N with 120 staff is expected to generate a turnover of Sch 550mn-600mn in year 2000. It holds a market share of about 12%, including the animal feed segment.

AUSTRIA: GROWTH FOR SHOPPING CENTRES IN 1999

The consultancy company Standort + Markt reports that in 1999 Austria's 120 shopping centres saw a 10% increase in turnover to Sch 78bn. The number of visitors increased 11% to 270mn and the number of shops in supermarkets 3% to 3,950. The number of jobs rose to about 32,000.

AUSTRIA: RETAIL, WHOLESALE GROWTH IN 1ST HALF
Article Abstract:
In the first half of year 2000 Austria's retail trade saw an almost 5% increase in turnover compared with a year earlier. Wholesale turnover increased 9.1% in nominal terms and 5.8% in real terms. Employment in the trade sector was up 1.1% from the year earlier period.
