AUSTRIA: COLT EXPANDING IN INTERNET MARKET

The British telecoms company Colt is to set up Internet Solution Centres (ICS) in Brussels, Madrid, Milan, Stockholm, Vienna and Zurich in addition to the existing ones in London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris. Colt is considering two alternative locations for the ICS in Vienna. The Sch 200mn facility is to become operational in the third quarter of year 2000. Colt says that it will be the first full-service provider for business customers

AUSTRIA: FORECAST FOR E-COMMERCE MARKETS

On the basis of a study by the Gartner Group, Intel's director for Central Europe estimates that in year 2003 there will be 4.8mn internet users in Austria, each of them spending about EUR 529 per quarter on internet shopping. By then Austrian companies will spend about EUR 1.24bn on internet infrastructures. This is three times the spending in year 2000. Gartner Group forecasts that in 2005 internet shopping will account for about 25% of consumer spending and 70% of business-to-business transactions. A study by International Data Corp. (IDC) states that 23% of Austrian internet users use the net for shopping. 78% use it for information, 75% for e-mail, 59% for just surfing, 31% for software downloads, 27% for games, 26% for chatting, 21% for solving information technology problems, and 15% for bookings.

AUSTRIA/MIDDLE EAST: YLINE TO SET UP BRANCH

YLine, the Austrian Vienna-based internet company, is to set up a computer centre in the Middle East. The new unit somewhere between Dubai and Cairo will involve an investment of EUR 10mn to 15mn. It might be set up as a joint venture. The founder of YLine, Werner Bohm, has announced that the number of directors will be reduced from 5 to 3 and the number of staff by 5-10% from 160 at present. YLine, which has received a capital injection of about EUR 50mn from the US fund Navigator, is planning no major acquisition for the time being.
