GERMANY: MAGNA, TRW OPEN R&D CENTRE

Magna International and the US company TRW of Cleveland, Ohio, have opened an automotive research and test centre in Sailauf, Germany. Between them the two companies provide all types of automotive parts, except for engines. The Sch 430mn centre comprises 17 test stations that can test prototypes and automotive parts and components in simulation procedures and crash tests. The services will be offered to car makers. Acts, a joint venture of the two North American companies, is to raise the number of staff in Sailauf from 80 to 150 by the end of year 2000. The new test centre makes Magna into a comprehensive supplier from development to assembly. There are rumours according to which Magna is planning to start assembling of cars in America.

Austria: Mirko Kovats buys ATB Antriebstechnik

The Gesellschaft des Bundes fur Industriepolitische Ma nahmen (GBI) has sold its shares in the motor producer company ATB Austria Antriebstechnik and the German ATB Antriebstechnik to the Austrian industrialist, Mirko Kovats. This completes the total privatisation of the GBI on schedule. The Austrian ATB plant is letting 100 employees go, which leaves it with 600. In the financial year of 1999/2000, the ATB group had a turnover of EUR 142mn.
