AUSTRIA: GROWTH IN MOTOR VEHICLE MARKET IN 1999
Article Abstract:
In 1999 registrations of new motor vehicles in Austria increased 5.8% to 407,930 units. Car registrations increased 6.2% to 314,182, those of lorries 0.6% to 29,125 units and motorbikes 27,070 units. The number of new cars was the second-highest in Austria's history. Total spending on new cars amounted to Sch 87bn. The average price, at Sch 276,000, corresponds to 13 monthly salaries on average. Volkswagen remained the market leader by selling 63,470 new cars. The VW brand's share of the market rose from 18.7% to 20.2%. It was followed by Opel at 32,700 and Ford at 24,321 new registrations. Among those increasing their market shares were Opel and Peugeot. New car registrations in year 2000 are estimated at 302,000 units. It is predicted that in the next 4-5 years about one-third of Austria's 4,500 car dealers will have disappeared. About 3,000 of them engage in the sales of new cars.

AUSTRIA: JAGUAR TO EXPAND DISTRIBUTION

In three years, Jaguar, subsidiary of Ford, is aiming to increase annual sales in Austria to 800 cars, after sales of 420 units in 1999 and the planned 620 cars in 2000. There are at present eight Jaguar dealers in Austria, but the number is to be increased to 15 within the next few years. In Vienna, a new showroom is to be built for double-digit millions of schillings.

AUSTRIA: LADA MAKES A NEW START
Article Abstract:
A new company called Lada-Vertriebs GmbH has been set up to revive the sales of Lada cars in Austria. In the first 9 months of 1999 no more than 30 cars of the Russian manufacturer were sold in Austria. This compares with 168 Samara and 59 Taiga cars in 1998.
