About Sch 260mn is to be spent on the construction of galleries between the Arlberg road and rail tunnels in western Austria to improve the safety of the tunnels in accidents. Preparations of the project are estimated to take 5 years and the actual construction phase 2.5 years. The operator of the rail tunnel, Alpen Stra en AG, is to invest another Sch 100mn in the next four years on other safety features such as a new fire alarm system and the modernisation of the radio and ventilation systems.

Austria: Road tunnel planned in Klosterneuburg

According to Johanna Mikl-Leitner, managing director of Austrian People's Party OVP in Lower Austria, the environmental impact study of a proposed road tunnel in Klosterneuburg is to start on 10 September 2001. The study of the by-pass is to be completed in 9 months. The tunnel could be built between 2005 and 2010. The costs are estimated Sch 1bn.

AUSTRIA: TUNNEL PROJECT IN KLOSTERNEUBURG

Planning permission has been filed with the Austrian infrastructure ministry for the so-called Martins tunnel in Klosterneuburg. Construction start of the 1.25-km tunnel is scheduled for 2004. The costs of the road tunnel are estimated at Sch 1bn.
