AUSTRIA: NEW AREA CODES FOR AUSTRIAN TELEPHONES
Article Abstract:
Austrian infrastructure minister Monika Forstinger surprisingly revived an old concept of former transport minister Caspar Einem to introduce new area codes for the Austrian telephone system. The 1,044 local codes are to be replaced by 23 double-digit regional codes starting with the numbers 2, 3 or 4. People will have to dial them even for calls within the same region. The number 1 will be reserved for rescue and emergency services, the number 6 for mobile communication and the number 9 for added-value services. A timetable has not been set, but the ideal situation would be to introduce the new area codes over a period of three years, beginning in 2002. Accompanying measures of the state should cost Sch 250mn. The overall macro-economic costs (changing advertising material, forms, etc.) should add up to Sch 10bn or even Sch 22bn.
