AUSTRIA: NO GROWTH IN COFFEE MARKET
Article Abstract:
The Austrian coffee and tea federation reports that for the first time since 1945, no growth is being recorded in coffee consumption in Austria. This follows international trends. Per capita consumption of coffee in Austria is 168 litres per year, or 8 kg roast coffee, while the country's record is 12 kg. Beside reduced advertising, the decline is explained with new energy drinks and soft drinks. Due to pressure on prices, there is a trend towards cheaper coffee. Coffee prices are at a historical low, but they might increase slightly in year 2000, as coffee prices on commodity markets are rising. Kraft Jacobs Suchard is the leader in the Austrian coffee market, ahead of Tchibo/Eduscho and Hofer. Since 1994 Austria's consumption of tea, including herb tea and iced tea, has risen from 66 litres to 82 litres per person. Green tea accounts for 6 litres.

AUSTRIA: CAR SALES AT ALL-TIME HIGH
Article Abstract:
Year 1999 was one of the best years ever for Austrian car importers. A total of 301,768 new cars were registered in the country by the end of November, and the number was expected to grow to 320,000 by the end of the year. Reasons for the high demand include the good economic conditions, low inflation, low interests and the several new models introduced by car manufacturers. In 2000, Austrian car dealers expect to sell 302,000 passenger cars.
