AUSTRIA: POST TOWARDS PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED PAY
Article Abstract:
According to chairman Anton Wais, the Austrian Post is to introduce performance-oriented pay components. The new collective agreement that should take effect from the beginning of 2001 or 2002 contains also a pay component that is adjusted to the wages and salaries level in each region. In future mail delivery staff will work within profit centres. Each profit centre will consist of about 7 postmen and organise its work independently. The new pay structure will apply only to new staff. In the long term, however, it should result in an increase in productivity. By 2003 Osterreichische Post aims to cut by 20% personnel costs, which in 2001 amount to about Sch 14bn. This could mean the loss of 6,000 jobs by 2003. In the year to mid-2001, the number of staff was reduced by 1,700.

AUSTRIA: POST TO CHARGE VAT ON MASS MAIL
Article Abstract:
According to a decision by the Austrian Finance Ministry, Osterreichische Post will have to charge value-added tax for unaddressed mass mail from 1 September 2001. The national Post company is thus subject to the same conditions as its competitors. For the Post, such unaddressed mailings to households generate a turnover of about Sch 1.46bn annually. A 20% VAT will thus amount to just under Sch 300mn per year. For small clients who do not charge VAT, unaddressed mass mailings thus become 20% more expensive.
