AUSTRIA: SIG COMBIBLOC GOING TO ITALY

In 1999 the Austrian Saalfelden-based subsidiary of Swiss SIG Combibloc saw a marked improvement in profitability despite a 2.7% fall in turnover to Sch 2.055bn. Exports contribute 82% to sales. The company that has subsidiaries in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Russia has now been made responsible for the Swiss group's operations in Italy. In the latter market, the producer of food packaging sees increasing demand in the field of vegetable packaging. SIG Combibloc is to develop into a comprehensive service provider, including packaging plant and product consultancy rather than just producing the packaging. In the Austrian market that is led by TetraPak, SIG Combibloc holds a market share of about one-third. SIG packaging is used for the Ja naturlich!

AUSTRIA: FRANTSCHACH RESULTS FOR 1999

In 1999 the Austrian paper maker Frantschach AG saw a 6% increase in turnover to Sch 20.35bn, while earnings before interest and taxes grew by more than 3% to Sch 1.62bn. The main part of the investments of Sch 1.5bn planned by Frantschach for year 2000 goes to the Swiecie mill in Poland. Frantschach's chairman Veit Sorger says that the talks about the acquisition of 25 mills of Swedish Assi Doman have to be completed by mid-2000 or otherwise the deal is no longer interesting.

AUSTRIA: EU CLEARS FRANTSCHACH, MONDI DEAL

The European Commission has approved the deal in which Mondi of South Africa raises its stake in Frantschach, the Austrian Vienna-based paper and packaging manufacturer, from 50% to 70%.
