Accommodating change: Beijing's Friendship Hotel trades character for cash
Article Abstract:
Recent changes at Beijing's landmark Friendship Hotel have nearly eroded the remaining signs of its original status as the premiere dwelling for foreign experts who came to support China for ideological reasons. Originally built to house 10,000 Soviets, it became a cosmopolitan center that many remember fondly as a shared cultural experience. After 1976 it opened to tourists, and recent competition has increased their presence, as well as that of Chinese entrpreneurs. New laws will soon remove the last foreign experts.

The hard edge: for some, nationalism means dictatorship
Article Abstract:
Hard times in China encourage nationalist hard-liners who want a more authoritarian govt and who idolize Mao Zedong and Adolf Hitler. Currently Pan Yue is among the most prominent of the Young Turks, authors of internal policy documents. Even more liberal elements reportedly favor a govt like Singapore's. Communist leaders tolerate the authoritarians' notions until they get too extreme or activist, though some of the latter still disappear. Qing dynasty officials, notably Zeng Guofan, are also back in style.

Boom and busted: Shanghai construction takes off, but profits may fizzle
Article Abstract:
A glut of office property in Shanghai may halve rents and pummel investors. It developed out of the mad rush to get rights to space in Pudong when many developers did not know that the city would soon make downtown space available as well. While demand has been enormous, Shanghai has released 600 parcels, each equivalent to a New York City block. Now Pudong looks less attractive, and many developers are gambling that a new business district will emerge elsewhere.
