Actions, not words: EC warns Japan to open markets
Article Abstract:
Japanese and EC efforts to improve political ties broke down over trade issues. Top level negotiators from both parties disagreed over how to decrease Japan's $30 billion trade surplus with the EC. Japan's refusal to allow foreign rice into its market worsened the situation. To deal with Japan'srecalcitrance over its international trade policies, EC officials have stepped up political pressure and warned that Japan will find it hard to enhance its international clout untill it resolves trade imbalances with the EC.

Strait talking: U.S. fires verbal salvoes, Asia keeps largely mum
Article Abstract:
US leaders have adopted a firm stance regarding Beijing's military activity near Taiwan, after three years of taking a soft and, perhaps, vacillating approach. US President Clinton and two top advisers criticized China's actions, congressional leaders established their willingness to help Taiwan defend itself, and talk of arms sales moved forward. US allies in Asia stayed quiet or responded ambiguously to the situation, with Japan and S Korea trying to emphasize their ties to both Taiwan and China.
