Ad agencies hit a nerve, depicting men doing household chores on TV

Ads that portray men doing household chores on TV are a no-no in Asian TV, despite of the fact that more Asian women are working outside the home. According to a recent Ogivly & Mather study on Asian women responses on these kinds of ads, many Asian women are turned-off with ads that portray men doing household chores. For instance, the ad of LG Electronics of South Korea that showed a woman lying on the floor exercising, while a man vacuums the floor around her. The ad was not received well by some women, specially from Hong Kong and South Korea where in women considered the ad as a challenge to the leadership of women in the home.

Bausch & Lomb to expand

Bausch & Lomb, a manufacturer of eye-care products and contact lenses based in Rochester, NY, intends to create a chain of retail stores based on its flagship Ray-Ban sunglasses line in Asia. The stores, which are anticipated to carry only the Ray-Ban line, are designed to fully expose Asians to the firm's sunglasses line, according to Murali Nallakrishnan, regional branch director in Hong Kong. Bausch & Lomb anticipates to open two retail branches annually in Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia, for the next three to four years.

Battle of the debit cards heats up as firms scramble for customers

Mastercard International is launching its Maestro debit card campaign in Malaysia and in ot her Asian countries. The move is part of the ensuing battle between the two largest debit-card providers in the region, namely, Mastercard and Visa International. Visa International is planning to launch its new debit card called Electron. Unlike its first debit card called Interlink, which can be used only in the US and Asia, Electron can be used in the West, Australia and Asia.
