Adia's quality route to being world's No. 2 in temp help
Article Abstract:
The Switzerland-based temporary employment agent of Adia International S.A. operates in 16 countries, and is the second largest temporary employment agency in the world (the largest is Milwaukee-based Manpower Inc.). Since 1975, Adia has acquired 85 companies, increasing its gross revenues twelve times over and improving its profit level by a factor of 15. This acquisition policy is not unusual, since temporary employment is estimated by many business experts to be the third fastest growing industry (after the computer industry and the health care industry). International industry revenues for 1986 approximated $13 billion. In Adia's most recently completed fiscal year, it reported sales of $824 million and earnings of $24 million. Of total Adia sales, 89.6 percent occurred in foreign markets. Adia's strongest foreign markets are West Germany, France and Britain, and Adia is making in-roads in the Netherlands and the U.S.

Big boys next door: Switzerland and Sweden breed heavyweights with more clout than many in the EC ranking
Article Abstract:
Switzerland, with a population of 6.5 million, and Sweden, with a population of less than 8.5 million, have two of the strongest economies in the world. Despite their small domestic markets, Swiss and Swedish corporations are among the largest and most successful business enterprises in the world. The Swiss economy has strong pharmaceutical and high technology sectors, and Sweden is strong in engineering, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and forest products. Both countries are characterized by high per capita output, modern industries, low unemployment rates, relatively efficient governments, and positive balances of trade. Both countries are members of the European Trade Association, but Sweden has applied for full membership in the European Community.

From black sheep to white knight
Article Abstract:
Werner K. Rey has built up an impressive business reputation with Omni Holding AG (Bern, Switzerland), which maintains a share in or control of over 50 companies ranging from banks to real estate. Rey and his associates have had to earn acceptance from the Swiss business community over a decade, however, to overcome a negative reputation earned from an aborted, unfriendly takeover offer of Bally and Co in 1977.
