Current Asian financial crises are a result of the nations' own misdeeds and mistakes. Booming financial growth in the 1980s covered up shoddy and often corrupt banking practices. Recent estimates put the percentage of bad loans in Asia at 20% of total loans, compared to 1% in America.

Distrust banks: Japanese banking
Article Abstract:
Japanese trust banks have come out of the banking industry debt crisis free of bad loans by disguising their bad debts. This allows the banks to look good in the public eye, but does not hide the fact that these banks still lent money to risky financial pursuits.
