After turbulence, calm
Article Abstract:
Asian economic observers project that the export slowdown experienced in many Asian countries will lead to a stabilization of the region's economy. Observers predict modest growth and controlled inflation in the region. Countries that require constant monitoring are South Korea, with the slowdown of export demands for its semiconductors; Thailand, with a forecasted GDP growth of only 3.8% for 1997; China, whose consumer price inflation is expected to grow to 9.1%; and the Philippines, whose inflation could be driven by increases in minimum wages and petroleum prices.

Optimism holds despite export slippage
Article Abstract:
Economists do not believe that the decline in Asia's export growth in the 1st qtr. of 1996 will affect the region's overall economic growth. They say that the deceleration was due largely to the cyclical nature of major export industries. The economists also contend that export growth was bound to slow down in view of the unusually robust performance of the export sector in 1995. Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea, for instance, posted a remarkable 21% growth rate in merchandise exports during the year.

Export data hint at rebound
Article Abstract:
Economists predict an increase in Asian exports amid rising demand in the electronics market worldwide. This development is believed to signal a turnaround in 1997. They contend that increased inflow of foreign direct investments will help strengthen Asian exports in the future. However, experts warn that exports recovery will vary among Asian countries. China's recovery is apparent, while that of other countries will become evident only in 1997.
