Against the grain
Article Abstract:
European Union (EU) farmers are concerned that levels of farm support could be reduced at a time when they have been hit by difficult conditions in their markets. Farm subsidies account for half the budget of the EU, and farms account for some 5% of employment in the EU. Farm spending has to be tackled because planned new entrants to the EU have large agricultural sectors. EU governments generally favor a stable level of farm spending to 2006, with longer term reductions.
