Aging and the environment
Article Abstract:
The aging of Canada's population indicates that a smaller proportion of workers in the future will bear the fiscal responsibility of an increasing population of elderly. In tandem with the aging of Canada's population, the abuse of the environment indicates a decreased economic legacy will be passed on to future generations. To avoid future conflicts between workers and retirees, as well as to minimize difficulty in maintaining the standard of living, the country must increase the growth in productivity, which has been sluggish, to ensure there will be enough economic resources in the future. The management of the environment renewable resources must also be a priority of the government. Canada must reach reasonable standards of air and water quality within the 1990s and reorient government policy to give greater priority to the consequences of economic activities on future generations.

Competitiveness and the public sector
Article Abstract:
The globalization of the economy has led to increased competition, and one of the greatest challenges of the 1990s will be for Canada to improve its competitiveness in the international environment. The Economic Council of Canada is studying the effect of the public sector on the competitiveness of the country. The objectives of the study include identifying how the government's decisions affect the competitiveness of Canadian industry, analyzing how the government's activities have changed over time, and comparing the Canadian government's costs with those of other countries' governments.
