Alfred Schnittke
Article Abstract:
Alfred Schnittke had to increase his production of writing music for motion pictures in order to obtain a larger apartment in Russia. He was unable to become an official composer due to having refused to change parts of two of his operas, and so offending the Composers' Union. Schnittke was not allowed to take up invitations to travel abroad in the two decades to 1984, and his First Symphony could not be performed in Moscow, but opened in Gorky. The First Symphony was a major poly-stylistic work.
