American Express, Pain Webber move into Japan

The American Express Co and PaineWebber Group Inc have set up shop in Japan. American Express plans to establish a mutual fund company in 1999 and will initially sell funds and other securities to its 1.1 million cardholders in Japan. On the other hand, PaineWebber will set up a mutual fund company with Yasuda Mutual Life Insurance Co. PaineWebber will bring to the venture its expertise in marketing and asset management while Yasuda will contribute its research and sales resources.

Insurance market opened: Toho Mutual Venture puts GE Capital in Japan
Article Abstract:
The operations and management of Toho Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Japan will be supervised by General Electric-owned GE Capital Services Corp. The move was prompted by the financial difficulties the Japanese firm was experiencing including stock losses, bad loans, and mismanagement of its central businesses. The two firms have also agreed to finance a new insurance firm controlled by GE by raising some $1.1 million dollars in funding.
