American cancels flights in pilot dispute

Sixteen percent of American Airlines flights were cancelled on February 8, 1999 as a result of the carrier's labor dispute with its pilots. American is the second-largest airline in the US. American said that it cancelled up to 360 flights on February 8 due to a shortage of pilots. The carrier had a schedule of 2,250 departures. On February 7, American cancelled 240 flights.
